Why Inclusion Matters in Retirement Living — Today More Than Ever

Across the country, LGBTQ seniors are increasingly seeking retirement communities that welcome everyone — places where they’ll feel safe, seen, and supported. At Vista Point at Fairview, we believe creating an inclusive retirement community isn’t about politics — it’s about people. It’s about ensuring daily life, from dining to events to everyday conversations, is filled with respect, openness, and warmth. Inclusive senior living means having a true sense of belonging in retirement — knowing your neighbors will respect and embrace you for who you are.

While there may be comfort in the familiar, new experiences and friendships help keep us engaged and fulfilled. What makes life richer — and all of us more interesting — are diverse experiences, perspectives, and connections. That’s why we believe so strongly in senior living diversity and inclusion. Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy life and discover new possibilities, regardless of race, religion, ability, or sexual identity.

As a nonprofit Life Plan Community, Vista Point is proud of our distinct advantages:

  • 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Foundation – serving residents, not shareholders
  • Unmatched Location – Southeastern Connecticut’s only waterfront Life Plan Community
  • Local Leadership – deeply connected to the community we serve
  • Commitment to Inclusion – ensuring all residents feel welcome, safe, and celebrated

Diversity Heart

Inclusion Has Always Been Part of Who We Are

Fairview senior living in Groton, CT, was founded on acceptance and inclusion in 1892. Still, we recently recognized the importance of being even more vocal and transparent about our commitment to providing LGBTQ-friendly senior living. As part of that effort, we added this statement on to our website:

Fairview was founded by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) in 1892. Since the beginning, we’ve affirmed that we will not discriminate against any individual based on disability, age (other than the minimum age for residency), ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other social identity.

Simply put, we openly welcome all and are a safe place for everyone to call home. That has been true for more than 130 years — and it always will be.

Why Diversity Makes Vista Point Better

Choosing a safe and affirming senior living community offers these advantages:

  • Celebrating what makes us unique: Diversity means acknowledging and celebrating differences in age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation. It helps every resident feel welcomed, valued, and respected — while encouraging new cultural experiences, perspectives, and friendships. You may even discover a new hobby or circle of friends.
  • Better health and well-being: Social isolation and loneliness are linked to increased risks of chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and depression. A diverse community offers more opportunities to connect with others who share your interests and experiences — as well as new activities and programs that foster a vibrant, fulfilling lifestyle.
  • More opportunities to learn: A diverse community creates natural opportunities to learn from one another. Residents can share cultural traditions, life experiences, hobbies, and travel stories — enriching life for everyone.
  • Promoting understanding and acceptance: When neighbors from different backgrounds connect, understanding grows. Hearing real-life stories and perspectives helps break down stereotypes and encourages deeper compassion.
  • A safe place to age, even without traditional family support: For LGBTQ older adults without children, planning ahead can feel especially daunting. Who will advocate for you? Who will be there when needs change? As a Life Plan Community, Vista Point provides a continuum of on-site care — independent living, assisted living, and memory care — all in one welcoming place. You can enjoy life today knowing compassionate support is here for tomorrow.
